In 1521 the Treaty of Worms assigns Ampezzo to Austria. For 393 years Cortina has benn part of the Hasburg Empire, living according to the values fixed on its coat of arms "Modo vivo ac tuta quiesco" (I live peaceful and with parsimony).

Two blocks form: the Central Empires (Austria-Hungary, German and Turkey) and the Triple Alliance (France, England and Russia).

28 JUNE: the archduke of Austria, Francis Joseph, and his wife are killed in Sarajevo.

28 JULY: Austri-Hungary declares war on Serbia.

1° AUGUST: Germany declares war on Russia. Some people from Ampezzo leave for Galizia (Poland-Russia) and 37 of them die.

2 AUGUST: Italy declares its neutrality "per sacro egoismo" (for sacred egoism). Europe is on fire.

22 MARCH: the Russians occupy the fortifield town of Przemysl in Galizia; some people from Ampezzo are among the 120.000 prisoners.

2 MAY: Austro-German victory on the Russians in Gorlice. Poland is occupied.

23 MAY: Italy declares war on Austria.

27 MAY:eight infantryment of the "Marche" brigade enter Cortina. The militarized men from Ampezzo aged 16 to 50 defend the austrian front north of Cortina.

JUNE-JULY: Italian attacks on the Col di Lana, Sas de Stria, Tofane, Son Pouses, M. Piana, with several dead people and few result.

20 JULY: General Cantore dies in Fontana Negra.

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER the useless Italian attacks resume on the Cristallo and the Castelletto.

1° JANUARY: 1 st. mine on the Lagazuoi (Austrian).

MAY-JUNE: repeated Italian attacks on the Dolomities front.

17 APRIL:  Italian mine on the Col di Lana.

11 JULY: Italian mine on the Castelletto.

5 NOVEMBER: Austrian troops enter Cortina again.
